DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1450Z April 16th, 2025

Central United States/Gulf of America/Southeastern United States...
A large area of moderate density smoke attributed to previous and
ongoing fires was observed this morning stretching south from the Upper
Midwest region from southern Minnesota through the central region of
the U.S. and towards the Gulf Coast before dispersing into the Gulf of
America off the shore of Louisiana. Smoke from the north-central states
was drifting due south, while smoke from the south-central states was
moving toward the southeast. Several light to moderate density smoke
plumes scattered throughout the Southeastern United States were also
observed blowing southward.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Northern and Central Mexico/Pacific Ocean/Texas/Gulf of America...
An area of light to moderate density smoke and aerosols attributed to
scattered agricultural burning and volcanic emissions throughout Northern
and Central Mexico was observed this morning. The combination of smoke
and aerosols from the northwestern coast of Mexico was observed extending
west into the Pacific Ocean. It then continued east over southern Texas
into the Gulf of America near the west coast of Florida. A separate band
of moderate density smoke was observed originating from Central Mexico
extending southwestward into the Pacific Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
