DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1550Z May 22, 2025
SMOKE: Central Canada... Large wildfires in southern/central Manitoba and central Saskatchewan were observed producing moderate to heavy density smoke moving northwestward across central Canada. The heaviest area of smoke is coming from the fires burning in southeast Manitoba and moving west across the region and smoke seen over western Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan. Another area of moderately dense smoke can be across central and northeastern Saskatchewan. Oklahoma/Texas/New Mexico... Remnant smoke from wildfires in Arizona and southeastern California was seen across eastern/central New Mexico and into the western/central Texas/Oklahoma. These wildfires are currently producing light smoke near source. Cloud cover is making difficult to determine if residual smoke extends across parts of central/eastern and into southern Texas. AEROSOL/SMOKE: Mexico/Central America/Pacific Ocean/Gulf of America... An expansive area of light density smoke and aerosols - attributed to widespread seasonal fire activity, and industrial sources throughout western, central, and southern Mexico was observed this morning extending across majority of Mexico, the Pacific Ocean off Mexico’s western coastline, the central/southern Gulf of America, and northwestern Central America. Cloud cover across the northern Gulf of America region is making it difficult to confirm smoke. JK THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG:http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg Smoke data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Smoke_Polygons Fire data: https://satepsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/pub/FIRE/web/HMS/Fire_Points ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
