DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z May 23, 2025

SMOKE:
Central Canada/Northwestern Territories/Nunavut/Upper Midwest...
Large wildfires in southern/central Manitoba and central Saskatchewan were
observed producing light to moderate density smoke moving northwestward
across the region. The smoke extended well north into the Northwestern
Territories/Nunavut and south into Upper Midwest over states North Dakota
and Minnesota.

AEROSOL/SMOKE:
Mexico/Central America/Pacific Ocean/Gulf of America/Southern United
States...
An expansive area of light density smoke and aerosols - attributed to
widespread seasonal fire activity, and industrial sources throughout
western, central, and southern Mexico was observed this morning extending
across the majority of Mexico, the Pacific Ocean off Mexico’s western
coastline, Gulf of America, and across the southern United States from
New Mexico to Florida.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
