DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2350Z June 20, 2025

SMOKE:
Alaska/Yukon/Canada/Northern and Central United States/Atlantic Ocean…
Widespread wildfire activity across Alaska, the Yukon, and much of central
Canada continued to generate expansive smoke coverage over large areas of
the Northern Hemisphere. Thick density smoke was observed over interior
Alaska and the northern Yukon, with plumes extending eastward and merging
with other smoke layers over central Canada.

A second area of moderate to thick smoke was present over portions
of central Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and northern Ontario, resulting
from persistent fire activities in these regions. The smoke extended
southeastward into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, while light smoke
spread further east over the Mid-Atlantic and western Atlantic Ocean.

In the central United States, moderate density smoke was analyzed
across eastern New Mexico, west Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri,
with additional light smoke extending northeast into Illinois, Indiana,
and the Midwestern states. This area is the result of regional fire
activity combined with transported smoke from the north and west.

Light smoke from Alaskan and Canadian wildfires continued to affect much
of the Northern Plains, the Pacific Northwest, and the southeastern U.S.,
with widespread dispersion reaching the Gulf Coast, Florida, and parts
of the Caribbean.

DUST:
Eastern Caribbean….
An area of Saharan Dust was seen over portions of the eastern Caribbean
Islands and the eastern Caribbean Sea.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE,
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
